What is Sex Therapy?

In many ways sex therapy overlaps with traditional therapy models. The aspect that’s different is that I have training and expertise in exploring areas of human sexuality. This opens the door to a lot of aspects of people's lives that can get missed in other therapies. Many therapists aren’t trained to talk about sexuality, or even feel comfortable doing so.

Sexuality is about connection, play, intimacy, how we feel about ourselves, and about ourselves in relationship. All the threads that help to foster mental and emotional distress or wellbeing run through this.

As we speak in our sessions, I might prompt you to notice elements of thoughts, images, or sensations in real-time. I will help you untangle what interpretations and narratives you’re automatically layering over your current experience. When nothing is off the table within a supportive conversation, you can understand your own boundaries, needs, desires, and wants in a new way.Sometimes there may be exercises to practice at home, to help you gather data about your experience. The work is about the relationship with the body, the emotions, and ourselves, and how we express that.

In our work together we would focus on the specific goals that brought you into treatment, with an added element of expanding your capacity for pleasure, connection to yourself and others, and openness to life.
